I want Diabetes too!

While Bryce was getting dressed after swim lessons, his little brother, Drew, was going through his swim bag and found some glucose tabs. He looked up at me and in his cutest now-3-year-old voice said "I feel low. Can I have a goocose tab?"

Bryce: "you are not low...you don't have diabetes!"

Drew: "yes I do"

Bryce: "if you had diabetes, you would need to have shots and finger pokes."

Drew: "but I'm low!"

Bryce: "you don't get low, I do. and glucose tabs are like my medicine....you can't have them"

Drew: "but Daddy gave me a goocose tab befo"

Bryce: "well, would you like to get pokes and stuff?"

Drew sticks out his bottom lip and runs to that other side of the locker room and sits down pouting.

When I asked him what was wrong, he looked at me with his big puppy dog eyes wet with tears and said, "Bryce said I can't have diabetes"

Funny how little brothers want to be just like their big brothers...no matter what.

  1. So stinkin' cute!
My Bug does that with Bean, too. She wants to be just like her big sis, diabetes and all. (not me!)
We have let her test a few times; partly to make her hush about it, partly just to keep an eye on things!
She came up to me the other day and asked me where her PDM is (Bean's OmniPod controller) and I told her she doesn't have one because she didn't have Diabetes and you would have thought by her face that I told her the sun wasn't ever going to shine again!

  2. Hi, I came to your blog through another D-blog. My daughter was diagnosed June, 2010 at the age of 4. Your little one sounds adorable! I have had other children tell me my daughter was lucky since she got candy for being low. Yeah, real lucky. I blog at www.vabeachduckfamily.blogspot.com

  3. Gotta love a little guy who looks up to his older brother! So cute!

My two non-D kiddos beg...I mean BEG...for "blucose" tabs.

  4. We have lots of younger sibling envy of big sis here too. I never was a big fan of juice for my kids before dx. Now I'm constantly telling my other two they can't have Grace's juice stash.

  8. Awww. My second son once offered to take Brandan's insulin shot for him, just because Brandan didn't want to. Brandan immediately lifted his arm in his brother's place. It was the sweetest thing. :)
